A Bird Man needs a town.
When I posted about Bird Man Stan I mentioned that I’d post updates about his progress. It says a lot about where I’m at at the moment that the only progress has been a distinct lack of progress. I’ve done the basic preliminary stuff like getting him into Illustrator and setting him up so I can colour him, but apart from a few colour trials for his clothes I haven’t done much with him. But a tiny bit of work has happened so I’ll share that. Instead of a flat colour background that I usually favour for a lot of my illustrations, I want Stan to be in some kind of setting, something that adds a little bit to his story. So in the background I want him to have some sort of town or city silhouette. These are my first sketches for what that might look like. The shapes of the buildings will be a bit crazier in the final version I think, but this is at least confirming that the way I want to shade the background with the darker shapes at the back will give it some depth that I’m after. Not sure at the moment if I’ll go for the level look of the top sketch or more of a rounded, fish-eye look like the bottom one.
